Is it reasonable to expect that when public resources such as water and forests are to be used or transferred to private hands, and when so much of our land, community and environment is at risk, that there would be the following:
- competitive tenders sought for public timber;
- a decision making process with equal access for the public;
- a fair review of the whole proposal with no exclusions;
- a review panel with sufficient expertise to ensure protection of air, water, land and the community;
- a complete and independent analysis of likely pulp mill pollutants and risks;
- clear public safety standards and continuous independent monitoring of pollutants and other impacts;
- maximum pollution levels established that if exceeded will trigger a shut down of the mill;
- water tight guarantees to ensure that any damage to other industries, the community or the environment are compensated for in the event of problems with the performance or design of the mill.
