Mr Turnbull,
I am writing to express my sincere concern over the possibility of the proposed Gunn’s Pulp Mill going ahead in the Tamar Valley.
32 years ago (just after I was born), my parents built a home on the banks of the beautiful Tamar River at Deviot, and although I now live in Brisbane, our family home where my sisters and I grew up will always be exactly that...‘home.’ To be able to get out of a Brisbane for even a weekend and fly home to that little piece of paradise is the most amazing feeling. Each time we are home we remind ourselves how lucky we are to have grown up in such a beautiful and serene part of the world.
As you are already aware, there are hundreds of well researched and scientifically proven environmental, health and even economic reasons for this mill not to go ahead in the Tamar Valley. I assure you those 10,000+ people who rallied against the mill in the streets of Launceston were not doing so because they had nothing better to do, nor were they rallying because as stated by Paul Lennon ‘people are frightened of change’. The obvious reality is that the people of Tasmania genuinely care about the effects air pollution, toxic effluent and odour emissions will have on the local environment, the tourism economy of the Valley and not least the health risks to the people in the area.
There is very good reason for that particular rally being the largest ever held in Launceston….people truly understand the environmental disaster faced by the Tamar Valley in the even of the mill going ahead.
Mr Turnbull, In this case, there is far more at stake than $$$. Tasmania has always had a reputation as being somewhere special, known for its unspoilt natural beauty, for this reason alone, the Tamar Valley is not the place to build a Pulp Mill. I implore you to take this into serious consideration when you make your final decision on the subject.
I understand you will have received thousands of similar letters, and thank you for having taken the time to read mine.
Kind Regards,
